Session Title: Courageous Conversations About Micro-Aggression: What You Didn’t Know You Said Still Hurts
Description:  The election of President Donald Trump has seen significant increases in acts of covert and overt acts of intolerance. While the appointment of Betsy DeVos as U.S. Secretary of Education set off a media firestorm of both criticism and praise from every side of the education debate. This proposal seeks to collectively understand the impact of such leadership on marginalized communities and to collaboratively engage in productive and responsive dialogue and research that supports and sustains community, addresses equity/justice and equality, and advances all towards an egalitarian mission.
This session will provide an introduction to micro-aggressions, covert and unconscious acts of humiliation or overt criticism of a marginalized people-group. The goal of this presentation is to help present and future women in school leadership with the tools to identify micro-aggressive words and behaviors and brainstorm how to strategically address and respond as well as how to avoid perpetrating micro-aggressions.
