Who Should Take This Course

Anyone who wants to better understand the struggles of America’s white working class from the perspective of someone who experienced the poverty and isolation of Kentucky’s Appalachia region, moving to Ohio, and eventually graduating from Yale University.

What You Will Learn

In this study, we will discuss J.D. Vance’s book Hillbilly Elegy in which he takes a probing look at the struggles of America’s white working class through his own story of growing up in a poor Rust Belt town. It is the story of how upward mobility really feels. And it is an urgent and troubling meditation on the loss of the American dream for a large segment of this country.
